Young bike messenger Chuck
Behind Bars Bicycle Shop was founded in 2004 by former bike messenger and heavy metal devotee Chuck Cowan. He wanted to serve the communities of North and Northeast Minneapolis at a time when there were no bike shops in the area. Sixteen years later, Behind Bars is still a small and friendly local business. Our little family includes a team of four mechanics, several animal skulls, and a rammequin named Ramsey.
We sell Kona, All-City, Surly, Giant, and Liv bikes -- plus clothes, gear, parts, and more. Our clientele spans mountain bikers, winter commuters, messengers, road racers, and people who just want to ride a bike and couldn’t care less about the subculture. Our staff does everything from race cyclocross to ride BMX. We bring a wealth of knowledge to our service whether we’re fixing a flat tire or overhauling a fork. Plus we know the best trails to ride from here to Bentonville.
In 2020, Behind Bars is more committed than ever to serving our community. This summer, we raffled off an All-City Space Horse and raised $14,100 for businesses in North Minneapolis. We partner with local organizations such as Midwest Dirt Legion, which teaches people of marginalized genders how to mountain bike. Our small team of shop ambassadors lead awesome group rides. We’re still the heavy metal bike shop, even if you’re just as likely to hear yacht rock blasting from our speakers these days.
